Sector News newsletter: 13 December 2024

Hello everyone,

As we close out 2024, I want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible work we’ve achieved together. This year, NACCHO, our 146 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs), and their 550 clinics have served over half a million clients. These numbers tell a powerful story—one of community-led care that works, with Aboriginal health in Aboriginal hands.

This year has not been without its challenges. The cost-of-living pressures and the outcome of the Referendum weighed heavily on many of us. Yet, through it all, our sector has shown extraordinary strength and resilience.

The results speak for themselves. In the last Commonwealth Budget, $141.3 million was allocated to our ACCHOs. These funds are driving critical initiatives in mental health, suicide prevention, affordable medicines, communicable disease management, and women’s health, including safeguarding Birthing on Country.

Our programs, such as the National Cancer Package, Culture Care Connect, and the Environmental Health Workforce Roadmap, have demonstrated what we can achieve when we lead with innovation and commitment. Each initiative brings us closer to Closing the Gap and creating lasting change for our communities.

At NACCHO, we’ve continued to advocate for greater certainty and capacity in our funding. The increases to the Indigenous Australians Health Program (IAHP) and the transition to four-year rolling agreements are major milestones that will enable us to plan long-term and achieve meaningful health outcomes.

And let’s not forget the tireless work being done in mental health, disability support, rheumatic heart disease prevention, and youth-focused initiatives. These programs are more than just solutions for today—they are investments in the future of our people.

To everyone who has contributed this year—our NACCHO staff, the Board, affiliates, and community members—I cannot thank you enough. Your dedication and commitment are the reason for our success, and you have made 2024 an extraordinary year.

As we look ahead to 2025, we know the challenges are significant. But so too are the opportunities. Together, we will continue to advocate, innovate, and deliver, ensuring that Aboriginal health remains in Aboriginal hands.

Thank you all for your hard work, your dedication, and your spirit. Let’s carry this momentum into the new year with pride, determination, and unity.

Wishing you all a safe and restful holiday season. Thank you.
