In the 40 years since it was established, Central Australian Aboriginal Congress (Congress) has become the largest Aboriginal medical service in the Northern Territory.  Congress is one of the most experienced in Aboriginal health in the country, is a national leader in comprehensive primary health care, and is a strong political advocate for the health of Aboriginal people.

Based in Alice Springs and reporting to the General Manager Human Resources, a newly created role has emerged.  The Organisational Capability Manager is a generalist HR role responsible for developing and leading workforce initiatives, strategic projects, building HR capability and workforce training and development.  Specific areas of focus in the first instance include :-

  • leading a refresh of the people performance and management framework;
  • leading the review of the WHS management system;
  • leading talent planning and implementation activities for organisational change projects and workforce development;
  • strengthening a reporting framework that captures meaningful data to promote organisational performance, assist decision making, minimise risk and enable achievement of the broader organisational objectives and priorities.

To be successful in this position, you will be a Registered Nurse (List A) with experience providing Primary Health Care to those suffering from chronic disease and across a range of other settings. You will require experience in working with Aboriginal communities and have an understanding of health issues in rural/remote areas and the impact of socio-economic factors on Aboriginal communities.

Candidates with previous experience in wounds management, community care, and adult immunisation will be highly regarded.

Rekindling The Spirit is a Lismore based, community organisation run by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, who offer a holistic approach to working with those families and communities to support the achievement of positive and lasting changes in their lives.

Rekindling the Spirit supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women to find their own path of empowerment through spiritual and emotional healing, by offering services that can help relieve poverty, distress, sickness, destitution, trans-generational trauma and other misfortunes. Our counselling, assistance, education and supplementary services focus on reducing the occurrence of domestic and family violence plus child abuse through the promotion of healing and wellbeing within families and the community.

Rekindling The Spirit is looking for a number of Full Time Male and Female Counsellors to provide front line, face to face services to support the implementation and ongoing management of a new program for our clients and community.

About the Opportunity The Kimberley Renal Service has an opportunity for a Chronic Kidney Disease Educator to join their multidisciplinary team based in Derby WA. The role

Lyndon is seeking an experienced Drug and Alcohol Clinician for a Senior Drug and Alcohol Educator role in the Murdi Paaki Drug and Alcohol Network (MPDAN), a workforce development strategy that aims to reduce the harm done by drugs and alcohol in Aboriginal communities.

Based at the Clinical Hub in Orange NSW, the position is responsible for providing: clinical, group and practice supervision, training and education and capacity building services to primary health care providers such as Aboriginal Health Workers, D&A workers and other community service workers in the MPDAN region. An important part of this role is supporting service development of partner Aboriginal Health Services in the region.

Regular travel to the region (i.e. Bourke, Broken Hill, Walgett and Coonamble) is required.

The position is full-time until 30th June 2018.

The candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in health, welfare or related disciplines.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in drug and alcohol service delivery.
  • A commitment to upskilling the drug and alcohol workforce including: evaluation, research, ongoing program development and quality improvement.
  • Experience providing education and supervision to clinical staff.
  • An ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, cross-agency and cross-cultural environment.
  • Experience working with or for Aboriginal organisations and communities.

  • Develop and implement Aboriginal Health Community Engagement Strategies for the NSW and ACT Aboriginal Quitline program

About the opportunity 

This position will be based in the University Centre for Rural Health-North Coast, (UCRH), located in Lismore.  The UCRH has links to the University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine and the School of Public Health, and the Universities of Wollongong, Western Sydney and Southern Cross University.   UCRH research is focused on health priorities for our region, and aims to contribute to knowledge relevant to rural health priorities in Australia and internationally.

This part-time two year position sits within the NHMRC funded Centre of Research Excellence in Integrated Quality Improvement in Indigenous Primary Health Care (CRE-IQI). The CRE-IQI’s vision is to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes by accelerating and strengthening large-scale primary health care (PHC) quality improvement efforts. The CRE-IQI supports collaborative efforts of researchers, service providers and policy makers to address priority areas for development of integrated quality improvement in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander PHC. The position will work with the research team and key collaborators to progress priority projects and work programs, including evaluation, research capacity building and research translation.  The position will also be responsible for providing project management support to the CRE-IQI, including oversight of administration and reporting requirements.

6.RACGP Indigenous Health Award

The RACGP recognises that improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is one of Australia’s highest health priorities. The RACGP supports research which makes a difference to health outcomes, policy and practice, and the capacity of general practice to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s health issues. It particularly encourages a systematic approach to strategic and policy-driven research focusing on primary care, developing collaborative approaches and the building of research capacity within populations and communities.

In 2003, the then RACGP President Professor Michael Kidd, waived his right to any form of payment and placed his allowance in a secure interest bearing account with the interest to be used as the basis of an annual award to support general practice initiatives in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. The RACGP Indigenous Health Award was offered for the first time in 2004. The award aims to build a wealth of research knowledge to draw on to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes, and also to develop and encourage researchers in this important field of work in Australia.

Award Details

One or more RACGP Indigenous Health Awards, valued at up to $9,000 in total (excluding GST), are available for a 12 month period to provide support for:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students
  • medical students to gain experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical graduates undertaking GP training
  • GP registrars and GPs undertaking research and educational projects in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health
  • other activities supporting the provision of high quality health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Eligibility

Applicants for the RACGP Indigenous Health Award must be:

  • a medical student; OR
  • a general practitioner or general practice registrar.

Selection criteria

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • training potential for applicants 40%
  • significance and relevance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health 20%
  • quality of the proposal 20%
  • value for money 10%
  • potential to build capacity in general practice clinical care, research and/or education and training 10%
