3.Indigenous communities urge NSW Government to protect them from visitors amid COVID-19 pandemic.
Isolated and overcrowded communities in far western New South Wales are calling on the State Government to urgently issue a public health order shutting them down to visitors before the Easter long weekend.
Key points:
- Wilcannia, Menindee and Ivanhoe community leaders say COVID-19 entering the towns would be catastrophic due to residents’ health conditions
- One Menindee not-for-profit has issued a plea to visitors to stay away over Easter, saying “it’s too dangerous”
- Wilcannia Local Aboriginal Land Council says enforced self-isolation would put further pressure on the households’ overcrowded living conditions
The mostly Indigenous communities of Wilcannia, Menindee and Ivanhoe are some of the most isolated in the state, more than 100 kilometres from a major supermarket or hospital.
