Position summary

The Eye Health Development and Policy Officer position provides an opportunity to foster a collaborative partnership between the Fred Hollows foundation and NACCHO to increase the prominence of eye health on the Australian Government’s agenda and support and strengthen comprehensive integrated eye health systems for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The overall aim will be to improve Indigenous eye health by providing NACCHO with the capacity to influence eye health policy and strengthen the delivery of eye health services through ACCHS (in full first?) across Australia.   

Line management

The Eye Health Development and Policy Officer will report to the CEO.

Special conditions

This is a two year fixed term contract which is  Canberra-based  and will require interstate travel.

 Core Responsibilities

The Eye Health Development and Policy Officer has the responsibility to:

  • Increase the policy and analytical capability of The Foundation’s Indigenous Australia Program;
  • Provide secretariat support to the Vision 2020 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander committee and support the committee’s strategic direction;
  • Further develop eye health policy and the required support systems at a national level;
  • Submit and contribute policies to the NACCHO Policy Workgroup;
  • Assist with and support the development of media statements and other relevant communications;
  • Meet all compliance obligations such as report requirements internally and externally;
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement at Naccho;
  • Support state affiliates to strengthen the delivery of eye health services-state/territory focus.

Selection Criteria

 Essential

  • A demonstrated understanding/commitment to and support for the philosophy of Aboriginal community control in health and sensitivity to cultural issues and protocols in contemporary Aboriginal society;
  • High level liaison and negotiation skills and the ability to communicate and engage sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal people within ACCHSs as well as government and other key stakeholders;
  • Excellent knowledge of the Australian health care system;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to negotiate with and influence internal and external stake holders;
  • Demonstrated effective organisational skills, including the ability to effectively prioritise and manage multiple tasks and deadlines;
  • Strong advocacy and influencing skills;
  • Ability to shape and direct policy.

Desirable

  • Relevant tertiary qualification;
  • Prior experience in a similar position.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with ACCHS and/or excellent knowledge of ACCHSs.

Immediately following the closing date for the position the interview panel grades all applications and then a short-list is drawn up. Short-listed applicants are then notified of interview times. Interviews are conducted and a decision is made which must then be approved by CEO.

Finally, both the successful and unsuccessful applicants are notified of the decision.
